I don't have a favourite class in Fallen Earth, because there aren't any. The game has an entirely freeform skill system, allowing you to build a character any way you want to. You can specialise – it's recommended to do so if you're looking to min-max – but you don't have to.
I don't. The three main weapon categories – melee, pistols and rifles – all have their uses in different situations, and I like to keep my options open.
There's a tutorial sequence, which you can skip if you want to, but it's worth doing. It's shorter than it used to be – having been streamlined back in 2011 when the game went F2P, but it's still an excellent intro to the mechanics and to the world, as well as being fast paced and good fun. The corporate video for Lifenet which plays at the end is hilarious. This is often a very funny game – not comedic, but dry and sardonic.
After the tutorial you pick a town in which to start. There used to be nine towns to choose from, but to keep the new player population more concentrated this was, years ago, reduced to three.
The others are still out there though, and so while I've chosen to enter the wasteland in Midway I've immediately left and headed east to make the trip across Sector One to my favourite starter town, with a stop along the way at Mumford.
I'll always be fond of Mumford. It was the town I started in when I first played Fallen Earth, and I spent hours in and around it before I finally opened up the sector map and realised just what a tiny part of the zone I'd explored so far. This time it's just a quick stop to pick up some crafting materials in the vicinity of a crashed satellite. It's a really good spot for early scavenging.
After 2 hours I've yet to do a single quest, but I've travelled a fair distance across the sector, started my crafting and shot a few low level raiders who happened to be standing between me and where I was heading. I haven't played another MMO where doing nothing – at least nothing an NPC asked you to do – is so involving.
