And So Their Journey Begins...

The cutscene that introduces the Scions of the Seventh Dawn is only ten minutes long. That I say 'only' suggests I'm building up a tolerance to the narrative style of Final Fantasy XIV . The next two dungeons - Tam-Tara Deepcroft and Copperbell Mines - follow directly on from Sastasha in the MSQ, and since I'm currently running ahead of the minimum level for both I did them one after another with nothing much in between. These are slightly more complex than Sastasha, and there's two boss fights in Copperbell that can be tricky to anyone unfamiliar with the mechanics involved.* Neither are hard though, and both runs were smooth and enjoyable. *I'd like to take this opportunity to issue a belated apology to the players I ran Copperbell Mines with on my first character. It's nothing personal

The personal questline in Guild Wars 2 isn't really about me, which is ironic if you think about it. Even discounting my inadvertent power levelling at the start of this run, I've been levelling at an insane speed recently - so fast I keep wondering if there's some double XP event going on that I don't know about. One effect of this is that I've spent a lot of time doing the personal questline recently, since by the time I'd finished the stage that unlocks at level 60 I was already a high enough level to go straight into the next part at level 70. My opinion of the personal story is... mixed. The early stages are okay, the initial Durmond Priory stuff is good and Rat-Tastrophe is straight up fantastic. At level 60 the focus shifts to the Risen. This involves a lot of big fights between our hero plus assorted allies and hordes of undead, and I do mean a LOT. It gets a bit repetitive, and since your allies are drawn from all of the races of Tyria and so are the ...

The ghost of content past

In my last post I commented on how, with an item level of about 8K, I was barely on par for the legacy campaigns. This was a good thing, since whilst it's fun to power through old content once you've advanced beyond it, it's less fun if that's your starting point. I like to earn my god mode - not have it handed to me on a plate. So imagine my reaction when five minutes into the introduction to Undermountain I'm handed a whole new set of gear which boosted my item level to 13K instantly. I should have expected that - Ravenloft did the same thing to ensure that anyone on level for the newest content would have some chance of doing it - but even so I did worry that being powered up for Undermountain in this way would leave me overpowered for the older campaigns.
