24 Hours In... World of Warcraft

I'm an altaholic. In MMOs I rarely run with one character for too long, or with one game. Add this to my tendency to reroll and endgame becomes something I've often heard of but rarely experienced. I'm okay with that though, because on the rare occassions I have hit the level cap in an MMO I've only stayed around long enough to confirm that for me it's all about the journey, not the destination.

Still, I do think I could perhaps go a little further along on that journey.

This is "24 hours in..." in which I write about my efforts to play ONE character, in ONE game, for 24 hours of game time.

Starting with World of Warcraft.

My history with this game goes back to 2008. It was one of the first three MMOs I played, back when I discovered the genre. Even then it wasn't top of the list, and I've never went further than Outland. The last time I played regularly was during Cataclysm, when I took a number of runs of the Ironman Challenge – a self imposed perma-death levelling challenge that was popular at the time. A set of restrictions, including no potions, no professions except first aid, grey or white gear only and no specialisation, added some challenge back into levelling at a time when Cataclysm had turned the regular 1-60 experiece into a guided tour of Azeroth with little or no risk involved.

I didn't like Cataclysm at all. I loved the idea of it, and still do, but the execution left a lot to be desired and ultimately the best thing to come out of that expansion, for me at least, was that my favourite race (Blood Elves) could now be my favourite class (Warrior.)

So that's my character selected. This is the first I've spent much time in WoW since level scaling was introduced, and there are aspects to it that I really dislike, but I'll talk about that another time. For now it does at least allow me to squeeze the most game time out of zones I do like, so I'll be running the standard Blood Elf path of Eversong Woods followed by Ghostlands.

One thing I am curious to discover is how far I'll actually get in 24 hours. Starting off in two Burning Crusade era zones means the levels will come somewhat slower than if I dived straight into the more accelerated Cataclysm zones, but even so I expect I'll be within sight of Outland by the time I'm done.
