The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

There's plenty of all three in Star Wars The Old Republic . The Good I've played a Bounty Hunter before, but never previously went further than Dromund Kaas. This time around I've enjoyed the class a lot more while following the three rules I set for this character. 1. Always follow through on a job. 2. If the target is wanted dead or alive, dead is better. 3. If possible, kill the client as well. This has led me to take some really mean spirited options that I've passed up on in the past and I've lost count of the number of times a conversation scene has ended with a blaster shot. It's not dissimilar to my experience on the Sith Warrior, except where she chews the scenery and goes all in on being Evil with a capital E, the Bounty Hunter is much more businesslike and her dry, understated ruthlessness just makes the mayhem more entertaining. Are we the baddies?

Sometimes I get the feeling that Mako hasn't read the bounty hunter job description. Most of the class story for the Bounty Hunter on Nar Shaddaa isn't particularly memorable. It suffers a bit from opening with much the same action as the first stage of the planetary story, so between shooting dudes and breaking things for the Imps and shooting dudes and breaking things for myself it all got a bit blurry. The subplot about my rival was potentially interesting but was dealt with in one quick scene. The story does have a satisfying conclusion though, and goes some way to answer a question that's been bugging me since Dromund Kaas - why is my companion so whiny? Several of the initial companions in SWTOR lean very heavily to either the light side or the dark, and this can make things awkward if your character leans the other way. Vette is probably the most egregious example of this, and her behaviour is wildly inconsistent from scene to scene depending on whether the scene is

Cryptic Comparisons

This is my second Cryptic MMO in a row, or third if you count City of Heroes . No, I'm not going to make it four with Champions Online . To follow on from my last post, if there's one game I should compare Star Trek Online to it's surely Neverwinter . Yet for all that they have in common the moment to moment experience of the two games is very different. In Neverwinter the focus is on heroic action - my Rogue can, and routinely does, take on multiple enemies with little effort. STO , by comparison, is more understated and, for a certain definition of the word, realistic. It's a slower paced game. There's actual travel time between worlds, unlike in Neverwinter where you can move from one zone to another instantaneously. STO is also more deliberately paced on those worlds - there's no mounts for one thing, though sometimes there is a network of transporter pads that can be unlocked.
