Another 24 Hours In... RIFT

It's like riding a bike.

When I finished up my latest run of Star Trek Online my original intention was that the next game up would be Star Wars The Old Republic. There was a little voice at the back of my head that kept whispering "You want to roll a Bounty Hunter," which was weird because I haven't even watched The Mandalorian.

However, SWTOR has an expansion launching this month, and while I'm nowhere near the point where I'd actually be running the new content on either of my current characters in that game I've decided to hold off for now. I don't really want to end up writing about game mechanics that end up being altered only days later.

So I'm back to RIFT, a game that surely won't be seeing any changes any time soon... or will it? Within the last week Gamigo have talked about 'a great update' early next year. What that will actually mean remains to be seen - I admit I'm sceptical - but we'll see.

After my recent experience with STO I was a little wary of returning to RIFT. Again it's been a while since I last played this game - almost exactly a year - and I had a vague recollection of multiple hotbars and fairly involved skill rotations. I needn't have worried, since after taking on a few random mobs I had the feel of the combat again, and remembered why I'd set my hotbars up the way I had.

(In fact the hotbar/keybind setup I use here is one I've since carried over to others, including Star Trek Online.)

I'd finished up the zone story for Gloamwood at the end of my last run, so once I knew what I was doing I head up to Iron Pine Peak, where an unexpected encounter with a rare Elite mob provided a more challenging test. That enemy almost killed me and I had to use a couple of consumables to get through the fight, but I walked away the victor and seeing as it was an Elite and three levels higher than me I felt pretty good about that.

There are aspects of the game I haven't delved back into yet - I've steered clear of active rifts, and while I've looked at the Soul Trees I haven't yet set up my second build, though I do have some ideas of what I want to do with it.

Still, I've been pleasantly surprised at how easy RIFT has been to get back into.
