City of Heroes: Day 4

Another day, another alt.

So far in City of Heroes I've ran a hero archetype in Paragon City, a villain archetype in the Rogue Isles, and another villain archetype in Praetoria.  Now, returning to Paragon City once more, I've chosen to go with a Heroic Epic Archetype, or HEAT.

HEATs were originally only available to players who already had at least one level 50 Hero.  That restriction was removed a long time ago, but was perhaps due to these two ATs being (relatively) more complex than the others, even though unlike those others HEATS do not offer a choice of primary and secondary powersets.  The powersets they do come with, however, offer some very significant build choices.  I'll probably discuss that a bit more later on, once it's relevant to this character.

I've decided to go with a Warshade, as recommended by Massively Overpowered's guide to the heroic archetypes...

"Oh who cares.  Seriously, no one rolls one of these unless you specifically want to suck because they're just not good and you only have one set of powers anyhow."

I'm using a fairly broad definition of 'recommended' here.

It is fair to say that Warshades are one of the more divisive archetypes in City of Heroes.  Whether it's their backstory as reformed villains, or the prevalence of knockback as a secondary effect of some of their powers, or that their mere presence generates extra mobs specifically designed to kill them, or just that they lend themselves to characterisations so edgy they could have stepped straight from the pages of a 90s comic by Image, there's definitely something about Warshades that rubs some people up the wrong way.

On the upside they do have some unique powers - I couldn't ever say no to eye beams at level 1 - and also start with a free travel power, even if this is arguably mostly useful to cut down on travel time back from the hospital after being dropped by a Quantum Gunner... again.

Most significantly, Warshades (and their fellow HEATs, Peacebringers) have a unique story arc that runs through the levelling experience, opening up new chapters every 5 levels or so.  It may be that following this story will bring me back to this character sooner rather than later after this run, and perhaps all the way to level 50.*

*Perhaps.  Even after clearing up my roster there's still a dozen or more other characters still waiting for their turn in the spotlight.

So enter Ms. Midnight.  You can tell she's a Warshade because she's wearing purple.
